Black Sheep Art

Nicola Turner, this year’s Ashburner Prize winner, has used part of her prize money to buy up 23 Black Sheep fleeces, advertised locally on Facebook, for her studio work. Sadly these days, farmers are struggling as sheep wool has almost no value. But for Nicola, and a local sheep farmer, it has been a godsend to find just what she wanted right on Stone Lane Garden’s doorstep. Nick Parker, curator of the 2021 Summer Sculpture Exhibition, is intrigued by her purchase. “Nicola’s piece ‘This Mortal Coir’ has been such a success, I am interested to see the creative use to which Nicola will put her black fleeces. It is likely to be both expressive and distinctive”.

A brilliant, brilliant evening!

“What a brilliant, brilliant evening” was just one comment from an audience member who came to see the production ROBIN HOOD last night at Stone Lane Gardens. The Three Inch Fools theatre company really excelled themselves and left the audience in awe of their acting skills, comic timing and musical abilities. Staged in the field known as ‘June’s Meadow’, in honour of June Ashburner, the original owner of Stone Lane Gardens, the audience sat on deckchairs and on rugs in the pleasant warmth of the evening enjoying their picnics and tipple of their choice. The backdrop of trees and glorious views of Dartmoor in the setting sun made it an even more enchanting evening. Limited tickets are already on sale for our next presentation of Shakespeare’s THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR on Sunday, 15 August. Go to our on-line shop for details: www.stonelanegardens.com

Chagford Conservation Group help at the Gardens

Chagford Conservation Group was at Stone Lane Gardens today to help gardens manager Paul Bartlett with some very necessary thistle pulling in the new plantation. Since the contract ended with a local farmer to graze sheep in the field now known as Kenneth’s Meadow, thistles have taken over in a newly planted area which will eventually become part of the visitor trail. Despite the heat in today’s sunny conditions 11 members of the Group, which volunteers at the gardens regularly, stoically pulled up what machinery just can’t reach. “I was impressed by what the CCG managed to achieve and we are always very grateful for their help,” commented Paul.

Last Friday, 17 September 2021, saw trustees and some of our team of Gardens volunteers out in the fields, known as June’s Meadow and Kenneth’s Meadow, sowing by hand on specially prepared land, seeds which will generate wildflower meadows for visitors to enjoy in years to come. We are grateful to the donors who provided seeds from the local area enabling us to create large areas of wildflowers which will in time compliment Devon’s beautiful natural landscape.

Call closes  1200 15th March 2022

SPONSOR: Caradon Granite, Lantoom Quarry, Cornwall

Applications are invited from sculptors or installation artists to carve or work with a piece of Cornish granite weighing approximately 1.5 tons and being just under 1 cubic metre in volume. The finished piece must articulate the theme ‘connectivity’.

Applicants must be early career/emerging artists, based in or connected to the South West of England.  The stone can be chosen from a selection available at a quarry near Minions in Cornwall either by visiting the quarry or viewing photographs with measurements.

Many thanks to the 13 members of the Chagford Conservation Group who turned out today to help Paul Bartlett, gardens manager, move “The Shed” from the tea garden to its new, more appropriate, location where it can be put to good use as a wood store. The shed was originally sited inside the entrance to the gardens, where June Ashburner’s two geese had their home, until it was moved to the tea garden. Despite its age, surprisingly the shed has remained intact throughout its travels, including today’s move via tractor, trailer and CCG  manpower.

Sir Tim Smit is set to open the Ashburner Prize sculpture exhibition at Stone Lane Gardens to the public on 1st July at 3pm. The prestigious exhibition will showcase the South West’s emerging artists and will be open to visitors until October 31st.

Located, near Chagford, Devon, only minutes from the A30 and Castle Drogo, the Gardens have been described as “a gem” by horticulturalist and broadcaster Jo Swift.

Now in its 30th year the exhibition has received a record number of entries from artists competing for the prize which this year is sponsored by Caradon Granite. Most pieces exhibited will be available to buy.

Stone Lane Gardens is an RHS Partner Garden, which holds a unique National Collection of Birch and Alder trees from around the world. The Gardens have long had a connection with art and have a semi-permanent collection of sculptures to enjoy within its grounds by renowned artists including Peter Randall-Page RA.

The Gardens are an inspiration to artists and visitors. 2021 prize winner, Nicola Turner says, “Every time I visited, it was a joy to wander and discover all the exhibits nestled in its corners”.

The Ashburner Prize is named after the Garden’s founders, June and Kenneth Ashburner.

This year’s panel of judges consists of internationally renowned ceramic sculptor Sandy Brown, author and academic Penny Florence, and charity trustee Sandy Lipo. The theme of the 2022 exhibition is Connectivity.

Sir Tim Smit is a co-founder of the Eden project and first gained notability with his re-discovery of the Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall.

The Gardens are now open to the public on five days of the week, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, all year round from 10am till 6pm or sundown in winter.

On the two days of the week when the Gardens are closed to the public, Tuesday and Wednesday, a certain amount of sometimes noisy work, such as grass cutting or rotavating, goes on throughout the busy estate.

For the rest of the week our aim is to preserve the tranquility of this peaceful place for which it is so renowned. Our gardeners will continue their daily duties, but with the Gardens serenity much in mind.
