Woodland Wonders

A woodland floristry demonstration day

Friday 6th September 2013 from 11am to 4.30pm

Learn how to create stunning floral displays

We’ll start our day with coffee and an introduction to the history of the Garden. Paul Bartlett, The Garden Manager, will then escort us around the Garden and sculpture exhibition. (Stout walking shoes recommended.)

We’ll then move on to the Whiddon Down Village hall, five minutes away, where we’ll enjoy a glass of wine and a two course lunch.

This will be followed by a two hour demonstration by a local international Master Florist utilising natural woodland materials and flowers to make stunning displays.

We are delighted that Julie Collins MDPF (English Master) of the Academy of Floral Art in Devon, will be doing the demonstrations. Julie lectures in the UK and has a growing world-wide reputation for producing inspired new European designs.

Julie has had over 20 years experience in floristry and now has an International reputation.  She has recently published along with her business partner Tina Parkes  of the Academy of Floral Art her 2nd book,  Chic and Unique Flower Arrangements.  The book has sold over 10.000 copies both here and in the USA  The book is also being translated into 3 different languages.

Julie has recently returned from a week in the USA attending a floristry convention.  The Academy of Floral Art won a Silver medal at Hampton Court Flower Show in the Flower Arranging marque and the display was much admired by the public and featured on the TV coverage.

Rare birch discovered in Georgia

On the 17th September, our Garden Manager Paul Bartlett headed off to the country of Georgia, deep in the Caucasus region.

This was a follow-up trip to a journey Paul made last year (see our report here).  This year, he was concentrating on the mountainous region of Samegrelo in the north west of the country. Here he hoped to find the rare shrub birch Betula megrelica.

Paul is now back from his travels. He found small areas on two mountains that contained dwarf woodlands of this species. Seed from many trees was collected, to be grown and studied here in the UK. He also brought back samples of shoots which have been sent to the Plant Sciences department of Queen Mary University of London. There Nian Wang, a member of Dr Richard Buggs team, has  carried out molecular analysis of this wild-collected material and confirmed that all the material has a chromosome count of168 – confirming it as Betula megrelica.

This is an important discovery, as previously no studies of this species had been carried out in the wild. We now know much more about the niche habitat this species occupies in the wild.

Paul was supported on his trip by staff from Tbilisi Botanic Garden, with help from the Georgian Institute of Botany, as well as local guides.

We are very grateful to The Rufford Small Grant Trust and Plant Heritage (Devon Group) for financial support., without which the project could not have taken place.

deer1The new Mythic Garden Sculpture Exhibition opens on Saturday 2nd May here at Stone Lane Gardens.

Paul & Alison have been busy helping artists site their sculptures amongst the birches and alders as they come in to leaf.  With a few more days of hard graft, we will be ready for opening as scheduled on Saturday 2nd May.

The exhibition will run until October, but come and explore the imaginative and individual artworks in the glorious spring sunshine.  Then come back over the summer to see them change and settle into their spots amongst the trees.  Some are nestled away in lesser visited parts of the gardens so you might need a few visits to find them all!

Normal garden opening times and entrance charges apply.

Join the ‘Friends of Stone Lane Gardens’ and get free admission for the whole year.

The 2015 Mythic Garden Sculpture Exhibition is now open, with imaginative and inspired art work set amongst the trees and plants of Stone Lane Gardens.
Our peaceful woodland garden is a delightful location for sculpture, with pieces framed by trees or hidden among ferns and shrubs.
It is particularly enjoyed by families. Children love to ‘discover’ the sculptures and have an adventurous time in the garden. A great way to introduce people to art, but in a relaxed outdoor setting.

We are grateful for the generous support of our sponsors Francis Clark ,   Fowlers,   Helpful Holidays    and  Michelmores.
