Exciting new Barn Gallery exhibition

stallcombeWe are delighted to welcome back the Stallcombe House Weavery to exhibit their beautiful textile and ceramic work in The Barn Gallery.  From now until the end of September you can admire and buy pieces from this exciting new exhibition of work designed and made by residents and day placement guests in the Weavery.

Stallcombe House is a residential community for adults with learning disabilities, based in Woodbury near Exeter.  Residents are provided with a home for life and a happy and safe work place, with a holistic and organic approach to personal health and the living environment.  As part of this many of the residents and day placement guests choose to develop their creative talents in the Weavery.

Guided by Weavery Co-ordinator Sam Smith and her team, they produce a beautiful variety of pieces using the tactile mediums of felt and clay.  Residents and day guests are involved in all aspects of the work; contributing to the design as well as the creation of finished items ready for sale.

“We are all immensely proud of this achievement, and have enjoyed planning and producing these original works of art” said Sam, “Even the frames are made by our residents and day placement guests during their woodwork sessions.  Seeing their work on display and being enjoyed by others gives a huge boost to our team.”

Many of the felt items include wool from the Stallcombe alpacas and angora goats, so the residents who work mainly in the animal centre contribute to the work of the Weavery as well.

betula utilis 'Mt Luoji'Our nursery is in full swing, with orders being lifted and dispatched all over the UK and beyond.

We specialise in Birch and Alder, with many unusual species and varieties that you won’t find elsewhere.

Our darker barked Himalayan birch are stunning and rarely seen in UK gardens. Although they eventually grow tall they are only lightly shading, so ideal for many situations. The ‘Mount Luoji’, ‘Sichuan Red‘ and ‘Bhutan Sienna‘ cultivars are excellent.

Or how about a lovely white barked paper birch. Quick growing, smooth white bark and dazzling yellow autumn leaf colour.

We have just published our latest report, detailing the work we are carrying out to protect the endangered Mingrelian Birch. It is available to download from our dedicated page here.

This important conservation project, collaborating with BGCI and the Georgian Institute of Botany, will continue in 2017, with education of local school-children a top priority.

Urgent! Please help save our garden and the National Collections housed within it.

Delicate bark…ethereal and tactile

Following the recent death of the owner June Ashburner, the charity needs to carry out urgent renovation and development of the garden and property.

If we don’t act swiftly, then the garden, the National Collections of birch and alder, the annual Mythic Garden sculpture exhibition and all the creativity and inspiration that Kenneth and June encouraged and nurtured, may all slowly wither and fade to nothing.

We need to raise £50,000 to develop the garden, farmhouse and outbuildings to provide the income and infrastructure we need for the years ahead.

This is where you can make a real difference. With your support we can ensure that many generations of visitors can continue to enjoy and find inspiration amongst our beautiful trees.

To make a donation by credit/debit card or Paypal, please use the form below.
If you are a UK taxpayer, you may be able to boost your donation by 25p of Gift Aid for every £1 you donate (see box below).

NOTE: After clicking ‘donate’, click ‘continue’ under the ‘Don’t have a Paypal account‘ heading.

Payment by cheque

If you would prefer to send us a cheque, then please print off the form below and send it to us with your donation.

What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid is a scheme set up by the Government to allow Charities to reclaim the income tax you will already have paid on the donation you make to us.

This means that for a basic rate taxpayer, we can reclaim 25% of your donation from Revenue & Customs. So a donation of £10 is worth £12.50 to us if you ‘Gift Aid’ it.

Please read this: I am a UK taxpayer and understand that if I pay less Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax in the current tax year than the amount of Gift Aid claimed on all my donations it is my responsibility to pay any difference.

Please notify the charity if you want to cancel this declaration, change your name or home address or no longer pay sufficient tax on your income and/or capital gains. If you pay Income Tax at the higher or additional rate and want to receive the additional tax relief due to you, you must include all your Gift Aid donations on your Self-Assessment tax return or ask HM Revenue and Customs to adjust your tax code.

JOHN HOWELLS

John Howells is a Devon born photographer with a keen eye for wildlife, landscapes and their intimate details. After studying for a BSc and MSc in Biology at Exeter University John went into wildlife conservation before following the path of Photography, Art and Teaching.

In addition to teaching a number of successful art classes, John also passes on his knowledge via photographic workshops in which he explores local countryside features. With a huge catalogue of beautiful images he aims to teach and inspire others with his passion for all things natural. John has also colaborated on two books with a local poet which celebrate the changing of seasons and the magic within a location.

John is inspired by ephemeral art and takes pride in taking fantastic un-edited pictures of fleeting moments. Often seen wearing his signature feathered hat, John is a prominent figure around the arts circuits in Devon, with regular stands at craft fairs around the county. His stalls boast a wide array of images available in various sizes, mounted and / or framed, all signed and named individually.

John’s artistic talents also extend to pet portraiture and he has painted many a furry family member bringing joy and happy memories. John’s commissions do not stop there. He has painted fantastical occasions, often pre-raphaelite inspired, and he is fequently to be seen scetching the landscape and its wildlife.

Examples of John Howells’ work can be seen on his web site: www.johnhowells.co.uk

Friendly conservation charity seeks Trustees

Stone Lane Gardens, the home of the Mythic Garden sculpture exhibition, is looking to recruit up to 3 new volunteer Trustees. We are a small, friendly conservation and educational charity based at Stone Farm, near Chagford.  This is an exciting time to be a Trustee, as we look forward to making the most of our National Collections of birch and alder trees, the Mythic Garden sculpture exhibition and the property and land bequeathed to the charity. Our mission is to conserve birch and alder trees by promoting, researching, propagating and displaying our National Collections in a beautiful arboretum to educate and inform the public, alongside an educational display of high quality art in a natural setting. We would welcome volunteers who are interested in any aspect of the work of the charity and ideally have some experience in business, finance, fund-raising, public relations or running a gallery. Appreciation of horticulture, garden design or art would also be useful. If you are local, it would be easier for you to attend meetings and get involved, but living nearby is not essential. If you need help with transport, we may be able to assist.

We meet four times a year and our next AGM is October 2nd.  This may be a good opportunity to come and meet the other trustees and tell us about the skills you could bring to the charity. In addition to attending meetings, you would be advised to allow about 8 days a year for follow-up work and visits to the garden. Being a Trustee is a rewarding role, with responsibility for setting the overall strategic direction and development of the charity and for making sure it achieves its charitable objectives. We welcome applications from suitably qualified candidates from all backgrounds regardless of age, disability, gender and sexual orientation.  See the Charity Commission website for more information and to check your eligibility to act as a trustee.

If you are interested, please contact Pru Barnes, the secretary to the Trustees, for a chat.
